The 4688D padlock by Master Lock is TSA approved! No need to have unlocked baggage while traveling anymore. The red-and-white TSA logo on the lock notifies screeners that they can unlock and relock your baggage without having to break the lock open. Also, the 4688D comes in four colors–black, blue, red, and silver–for easy baggage identification. And with set-your-own combination convenience, you don’t have to worry about loosing the key while you travel.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) now suggests you lock your checked baggage with TSA-accepted and recognized locks. Travel Sentry™ Certified locks are accepted and recognized by the TSA. Look for the Travel Sentry™ symbol when shopping for TSA-accepted products.

Master Lock has joined together with TSA and Travel Sentry™ to use the special Travel Sentry™ mark on luggage locks that meet the requirements of the TSA. Airline check-in staff are trained to recognize the Travel Sentry™ mark, so they understand that baggage with this special mark is permitted to remain locked. The TSA screeners have access to special tools that allow them to open TSA-accepted locks in the event that your bags must be opened for inspection.

Airport security professionals no longer need to cut your locks or force your bag open and risk damaging it. They simply open your locks, inspect, and relock your bags, sending them quickly and securely on their way.

The red-and-white Travel Sentry™ logo on Master Lock TSA-accepted locks notifies TSA screeners that they can unlock, inspect, and relock the bag without damaging the lock.

Travel Tips from Master Lock

Whether you’re traveling within the United States or abroad, follow these simple steps to protect you and your belongings:

  1. When checking your baggage, use a Master Lock TSA-accepted locking device–the one device the airport screeners won’t cut! These locks allow TSA screeners to inspect and relock your baggage without damaging your lock.
  2. Secure your carry-on bags with a Master Lock TSA-accepted locking closure as an additional safeguard.
  3. Place your contact information inside and outside your baggage. This provides the fastest way to be reunited with your baggage if it is lost or mishandled.
  4. Use a TSA-accepted lock on all bags throughout your trip–even in your hotel room and at the bell desk–as an additional theft deterrent. Available locks include: set your own combination, keyed, or locking luggage straps.
  5. Carry an ATM card, credit cards, or traveler’s checks instead of cash. Keep your traveler’s checks in a money belt under your clothing for extra protection.
  6. As recommend by the U.S. State Department, register your trip in case of emergency with the free online service: travelregistration.state.gov
  7. Sign your passport, include emergency contact information, and give copies of it and other important documents to a family member or trusted friend in case of an emergency.

I have an older SporTube for protecting my skis when vacationing, and it originally came with a non-TSA lock with a long shackle. The holes in the Tube, where the shackle of the lock is inserted, are too long for most TSA-accepted locks.

The last time I traveled with the Tube, it was opened by a crack TSA person who did not take the time to properly re-lock it, and I found the two pieces of the SporTube at the Denver airport baggage claim with my skis jutting out of the bottom piece (thank God I had warpped them in my ski bibs before inserting them into the Tub).

This lock has a flexible shackle that will easily pass through the holes on the tube, and even the stupidest TSA person should be able to figure it out and re-lock my skis.

NOTE: SporTube sells their own version of this lock for $19.95 on their website, so this is a REAL bargain!

I agree with the other reviews who gave it few stars. It’s not sturdy at all. I can’t even use mine because it won’t close back up now that I’ve set my own numbers. So I’m going to attempt to return it even though it’s out of the package. Complete waste.

The link is flexible. I like that so I can use with my camping bag that have two open on one zip when I need to load on the plan. The problem is heavy. My bag is ~10 lbs + 1 lb for the locks, so I can load 35 lbs more in my bag (a lot of space left).

I needed a small lock to match up with a footlocker I had, so I purchased the Master Lock 4688D TSA Accepted Cable Luggage Lock. Well, first off, the lock is extremely small and light-duty. The cable is more like the stem of an apple, about that thickness. It’s covered with plastic, which adds some thickness to the cable, but no strength. Secondly, the self-setting combination numbers are so small, and the line-up marks for the numbers are so small, that it is very difficult to find your number (from 1-10), and then even more difficult to line the number up with the mark on the slim side-face of the lock. This lock is made for airline luggage, and might even be considered ‘use once, dispose of’. It’s not stout enough for my footlocker, even though it was matched up with my footlocker online during the ordering process.

This product is ok…hard to get the numbers EXACTLY lined up to open…I guess it is good it doesn’t open on its own.
